By industry standards, 2018 revealed investors' growing interest in robotics and drones. With the amount of successful venture capital deals last year, this sector demonstrates promising growth. According to financial data and software firm PitchBook, there were a total of 346 venture capital transactions in robotics and drones space in 2018. These deals are valued at $4.9 billion and have set high records.

Among the most prominent of last year’s venture capital deals were that of Chinese humanoid robotics startup Ubtech (accumulating $820 million), the robotic process automation startup UiPath (accumulating $225 million) and the robotic micro-surgical devices manufacturer Auris (accumulating $220 million).

The startups that make up this sector (robotics and drones) were involved in producing commercial and health products, electronics, and several types of hardware and software products. Looking closely at the 346 deals last year, it can be noted that one-third of these startups belong to the sub-sectors of B2C electronics, B2B electrical equipment, aerospace and defense.

As managing director of venture and accelerator firm The Robotics Hub, Chris Moehle assists entrepreneurs whose technology ventures can help improve the lives of other people. In this role, Chris Moehle engages with companies in various capacities, including serving as adviser and board observer of Module Housing.

Module Housing is a startup based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that builds homes configurable to the changing needs of the owner. At first, a person may only be able to afford a small home. But as his family and income grow, he can make additions to his home. Making additions is easy, as these homes are modular by design. It is almost like building and expanding a home using Lego blocks.

The company has patents pending for a removable wall and roof system, and collaborates with existing East Coast prefab manufacturers to produce high-quality building materials. The firm assists customers in selecting the right design, finding appropriate land, ordering the modules, and assembling the homes. With this approach, Module Housing aims to help address the housing shortage the country is currently facing from an affordability and sustainability perspective.
